Melvin (Nicholson) is an obsessive-compulsive writer who also sports New York's meanest mouth. But when he dog-sits for his hospitalized neighbor, Simon (Kinnear), this eventually puts a smile on his face and gives him the courage to pursue a local waitress (Hunt).

Nicholson gives another stunning performance and Hunt gives her best performance to date in this well directed and superbly written romantic comedy.
